Leyard and Epistar Cooperate to Speed Up Mini/Micro LED Production

Leyard and Epistar Cooperate to Speed Up Mini/Micro LED Production

On May 12, Huang Qin, secretary of the Wuxi Municipal Party Committee, and others visited Lijing Microelectronics Technology (Jiangsu) Co., Ltd. (LMT) and conducted a field survey on the construction of the Mini/Micro LED project. LMT is located in Liangxi District, Wuxi City. It was jointly invested by Leyard Group and Epistar and was incorporated in Wuxi on March 26, 2020. The joint venture will build the world's first industrial base in Wuxi that uses mass transfer technology to achieve mass production of the smallest size Micro LED display products.

It is expected that the plant decoration and equipment commissioning will be completed by the end of July this year, trial production will be completed in August and the Mini LED backlight display and Mini/Micro autoluminescence display products will be gradually put into production, and related businesses are in preparation. The completion of the base will accelerate the R&D and production of Mini LED backlight display and Mini/Micro autoluminescence display products with flip-chip packaging and mass transfer as the main production technologies, so as to realize the industrialization of Mini/Micro LED display modules and related products.

Tan Lianqi, co-founder and vice-chairman of Leyard Group, chairman of LMT, said in conversation that in the future the production of Mini/MicroLED through mass transfer technology will omit the intermediate packaging stage, so upstream chip factories and downstream applications can only achieve a win-win situation through close cooperation. Under this background, as the pioneer of upstream chip manufacturers and downstream application product manufacturers, Epistar and Leyard have joined forces, which is conducive to the two parties to play a synergistic effect in the LED industry chain and occupy the first-mover advantage, and can more effectively promote cross-strait economic and trade exchanges and industrial integration, promote the acceleration of the semiconductor industry chain, and at the same time radiate the common development of upstream and downstream products and related industries.

Although the COVID-19 epidemic has brought negative impacts on social and economic development, the cooperation enthusiasm of Leyard and Epistar has increased, and the scale of investment has even increased. The two sides not only overcame the adverse impacts of the pandemic, but also resumed production in a safe and orderly manner, and even “shifted gears to speed up” to comprehensively promote project implementation.

According to the latest media reports, Apple is negotiating with display manufacturers in Taiwan, China, and is expected to introduce microLED displays into its products as early as next year. Micro LED's luminous efficiency and screen light efficiency are higher than OLED, and more power-saving, greatly improving product life and standby time. It can be foreseen that the long-awaited MicroLED technology in the industry is about to enter the stage of large-scale commercialization, and LMT is now ready.
